The combined effects of demographic mechanisms and carrying capacity on invasive spread

Identifying the factors modulating range expansion is essential for predicting changes in the spatial distribution of populations, and is therefore crucial for invasion biology. Literature notably distinguishes between pulled and pushed invasion fronts, the advance of which depends respectively on small populations at the edge of the invaded area or on larger ones in its core, with differences in genetic diversity throughout the invasion that can become crucial later on. In a series of studies combining models of invasive population dynamics and experimental invasions, we investigated how positive density-dependence on growth (Allee effects) or dispersal can generate pushed fronts, as well as their interaction with environment carrying capacity, in order to the management of invasive spread.
