IHP
trimester on Mathematical Biology:
Mathematical
modeling of organization in living matter
Organizers:
Luis Almeida,
Vincent Calvez, Marie
Doumic, Benoit
Perthame, Patricia
Reynaud-Bouret
Despite the immense progresses made over
the last decades in mathematical biology, the multifaceted nature of
biological processes still represents an enormous challenge for
mathematical modeling. Technological advances lead to many new
experimental observations, which can then be used to improve the
accuracy of modeling. As a result, sophisticated mathematical methods
have be- come crucial for addressing the key questions and paradigms in
diverse biological systems, for making predictions of the effects of
system perturbations and for their control.
The goal of this program is three-fold: Emphasize the role of Analysis
and Partial Differential Equations in understanding biological
phenomena, foster cooperation among researchers in those subject areas
from everywhere in the world, and expose students and researchers to
challenging problems in the fields of living systems (biology and
medicine). An opening to the communities of statistics and probability
will be present all through the trimester. To make sure that the
interaction of mathematics with other sciences will play an important
part in the discussions we will have many members of other scientific
communities (in particular Biologists, Epidemiologists, Ecologists and
Biophysicists) participating in the different events. The main
scientific events of the trimester will be:
